Sugarloaf mountain4/6/2023 If you know my article about the Geoffroy’s marmosets, then you know that marmosets belong to the family Callitrichidae. Together with monkeys of the genera Mico and Cebuella they belong to the marmosets. To be more precisely, I saw common marmosets ( Callithrix jacchus).Ĭommon marmosets are from the genus Callithrix. While I had not expected to see any wild animal in Vitória, I was looking specifically for monkeys around the Sugarloaf Mountain in Rio de Janeiro.īecause according to my travel guide a group of monkeys lives in the forests around the Pista Cláudio Coutinho. Common marmosets at the Sugarloaf MountainĪs you are visiting a blog about wildlife, of course, I was in Rio de Janeiro not only to see the wonderful Sugarloaf Mountain. On the top of the Morro da Urca you can enjoy a wonderful view over Rio de Janeiro, and of course, over the Sugarloaf Mountain (see some photographs below). … and at other places roots characterize the path. The path leading up the Morro da Urca is mostly steep. The path leads steeply up and is well frequented by visitors. There are signs that indicate on the Pista Cláudio Coutinho where to hike up the Morro da Urca. ![]() If you walk from the entrance of the Pista Cláudio Coutinho a few meters, you have to turn left. If you wish to take only the second cable railway from the Morro da Urca, you have to hike up the Morro da Urca. One cable railway leads from the Praia Vermelha up to the Morro da Urca and the other one from the Morro da Urca to the Sugarloaf Mountain. Nevertheless, if you wish to visit the Sugarloaf Mountain, there are two options or cable railways, respectively. In the past, “Pau-Brasil” was used as a dyewood. The main threat of the “Pau-Brasil” is deforestation. Areas of its original distribution are almost completey destroyed. The “Pau-Brasil” is indigenous in the states Alagoas, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Norte and Sergipe. Therefore, the World Conservation Union IUCN lists this tree species in the category “endangered”. However, the “Pau-Brasil” is indigenous in Brazil and endangered. If you know more about this plant species in the photograph, please let me know in the comments. I’m not a botanist, but on the citizen science platform iNaturalist I was told, that this young tree on the photograph is not a “Pau-Brasil”. We also spotted indigenous plant species or indigenous trees, respectively, like the “Pau-Brasil” ( Caesalpinia echinata).Īpparently, this tree was planted on the 22th of April in 2000. In that moment I remembered my encounter with the crested capuchins in the Reserva Natural Vale where the monkeys were feeding on a jackfruit. It was not the first time that we had spotted a jackfruit in Brazil. Like, for example, the jackfruit ( Artocarpus heterophyllus). On our path on the Pista Cláudio Coutinho we spotted one of those invasive plant species. As a consequence, an ecosystem might become less diverse and fewer plant species will survive. It is important to control invasive plant species, as they have a competition advantage over indigenous plant species, because they are able to grow and reproduce more rapidly. However, invasive plant species at the Sugarloaf Mountain are controlled. Invasive plants are species that are not indigenous, and thus, alien species in a certain area. The path Pista Cláudio Coutinho leads through a forested area along the Morro da Urca.īut at some places the dense vegetation allows you to get a view of the sea.Īlong the path you can see invasive and exotic plant species.
